Language, Identity, and Politics: The Brewing Storm Over Hindi-Marathi Divide

A Cup of Tea or a Language Test?:-

I want pizza, speak in Marathi. I want to sit in an auto , speak in Marathi. Hey, if you want to live in Maharashtra, then you will have to speak Marathi. This is not a dialogue from any film. Rather, there is a new order prevailing on the roads of Mumbai, Pune and Thane for the past few days. But do you know what is the funniest thing amidst this order ? The Moment You Say English? English is great sir. But you spoke Hindi?

A Pizza Delivery and a Cultural Stand-Off:-

The delivery boy to the Hindi speaking hotel staff to the scolding of the auto driver to the boys speaking in Hindi on the road, what is this going on, those people who till yesterday were crying about imposition of Hindi, are today imposing Marathi on the Hindi speaking people and hence the question is that is the language which was going to connect hearts, becoming a part of politics? The question is also whether there is love for Marathi in Maharashtra and if yes, then how is Hindi sin and English father? And if not, then is this politics? Let’s imagine a little. A delivery boy on the streets of Mumbai works hard and sweats to deliver pizza in the sun or in the rain. And someone opens the door and says speak Marathi otherwise no money. Or if some person is in a hurry at the auto stand and requests and the auto driver says no, Don’t know Hindi and Marathi, won’t give it. You go to the tea shop, brother, have tea. Hey Hindi, can’t sit, no tea. But if you say the same thing in English. Welcome sir. Sure sir. No problem sir. Isn’t this a double standard ?

Multiple Incidents, One Message:-

These questions are being asked because the relationship between Hindi and Marathi is very old. Marathi literature gave depth to Hindi and Bollywood, which is in Mumbai, showed Marathi culture to the world. Both are going together. But the question is then how is this problem occurring? And the answer is politics. The result of ninja techniques of politics is to divide people on the basis of caste, religion or language. Any politician who uses these three as weapons easily starts appearing in the news.

The Politician Behind the Curtain: Raj Thackeray:-

And many times the public remains silent. Because he feels that we are exaggerating our things. Okay, we are not increasing it. Someone is increasing it. And if someone comes to protest then you are not silencing him by applying pressure of society. At least someone is doing it. If you are not supporting then keep quiet. And there have been multiple such incidents which have increased this hatred. On May 12, 2025, a delivery boy arrives. Gives pizza, asks for money. But the couple says, speak Marathi then you will get the money. That boy says that I don’t know Marathi. I have given you the pizza, please pay the money. He says no no no. Learn Marathi. If you want to live in Maharashtra, you will have to learn Marathi. He says ma’am I gave you pizza. Give me the money. No. No. And then the couple taunted him. The delivery boy was brave. He took out his mobile, recorded a video and posted it. Now even after this many people are giving different arguments. Some said that the guy was a poor delivery person so why was there a need to behave hooligan with him? Some people have come, no no no, Marathi is our pride. If you live in Maharashtra then you will have to learn Marathi. Ok? But what was the rule about eating free pizza in the name of Marathi ? But this is not the only incident; it is not that people are killing people everywhere and taking money. In Thane, the auto driver dropped off the Hindi speaking person. Abused and put the car to sleep. A video of a boy from Bihar went viral in which the boy from Bihar told that he works at a shop and he was mistreated. I did not treat the people from UP and Bihar as human beings. Same thing happened with the woman also. She went to the shopkeeper to ask for something and was scolded. Hey, if not Marathi then there is no goods. The question is whether this is love for the Marathi language or an excuse to scare Hindi. Now if you want to understand this drama then you will have to get into politics because the director of this drama is Raj Thackeray. Raj Thackeray whose politics is on the decline.

Silence from UP and Bihar Leadership:-

Once upon a time he was the star of Shiv Sena during the era of Bal Thackeray. But ever since he joined MNS, people’s attention turned away from him. Now he gets only one way to make a comeback every time. Hindi speaking people, abuse me. Our leaders in UP and Bihar have a bit weak spine. He is not able to reply to Raj Thackeray in that language. They are not able to make them realise that if all the Hindi belt people actually leave, then what will happen to Maharashtra? However, if Raj Thackeray or the people living in Maharashtra are concerned about the language of Maharashtra, then this concern is justified. Any human being would want to preserve his culture and his language. But to save the language, it is right to misbehave, beat up people , and abuse someone. This entire controversy started when the Maharashtra government made Hindi compulsory as the third language. One language will be English and one Marathi. Raj Thackeray said, no no no we are Hindus but not Hindi. A question came to my mind that Raj Thackeray Sir, Hindi is the official language then why the hatred? But Raj Thackeray ordered to go and tell everyone that if you want to live in Maharashtra then you know about Marathi and his party’s goons, they went to Andheri and beat up the Dmart employees who were talking in Hindi, slapped a security guard, scolded the women also and told many people that whoever speaks in Hindi will be slapped on the cheek, now was this a way of teaching the language or to shine in politics, the answer is very simple, although later on when pressure was built up, they calmed down, but this raised a question in the mind that this whole game is of politics.

Pride in Language is Fine. Hate is Not:-

Hindi is often targeted. Saying that Hindi language belongs to the people of UP and Bihar. However this is not true. Hindi connects crores of people from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Marathi and Kannada speaking people feel that their identity is being suppressed. However, saying again that those who feel that their identity is being suppressed, their feelings are justified. But you can’t do it by setting it on fire. If you are afraid that someone else’s language may be imposed on you, then you too cannot impose your language on anyone else. And if Raj Thackeray Sir or his people are harassing Hindi speaking people then why is Bollywood in Mumbai? If you want to shut down Bollywood, shut it down.Because there is money there and everybody wants to show their power on the poor man because there is no problem in killing the poor man.

The Bollywood Hypocrisy:-

You will not kill Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan , Hrithik Roshan. I will not kill you sir. You will kill that laborer from UP-Bihar who might have gone there to earn some money. Because if you kill him, nothing will be held against you. At the most there will be one complaint. Even if there is any, we will get their settlements demolished. If you kill a big man, the matter will become national and international. This is the way of the world, sir.

Everybody shows power over the poor man. You are also showing it. And if you love your status and your language so much then we are challenging you. Please remove Bollywood. Shahrukh, Salman, Aamir, Akshay, Ajay Devgan, remove them all. And if you don’t have the means, then don’t force yourself on a poor man, sir. It is not a good thing to show strength on a weak person, it is not a sign of bravery. And if you think that this is bravery, then may god give you wisdom. However, this drama is not just confined to Maharashtra.

Karnataka: The Mirror Image:-

This happens in Karnataka also. There is protest in the name of Hindi. A woman was harassed for speaking Hindi in Bengaluru Metro. A man is shouting. Hey, speak Kannada or else get down. Hindi signboards were vandalised in Bor last month. Only Kannada posters were pasted on the shops. Many people who were working there also wrote that learning Kannada. But why would beat you for speaking Hindi? And the question is right. Be it Marathi, Kannada or Tamil. You should protect your language. But where did the fashion of making Hindi an enemy come from? Now a question may arise in people’s minds that why do they target only Hindi ? Because this is not the case in Maharashtra. There will only be Hindi speakers. Why does the Hindi speaking person get beaten every time? His is Reese’s. There are two reasons. There is a large Hindi speaking population in the country. Who often go to Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru for jobs. There is also a large population among them which is poor population. Be from the working class or be a working professional. Middle class, lower middle class. These cases which you hear on social media, on TV, they happen to them only. You may not have heard it among elder people. Have you ever heard that any big businessman from UP or Bihar was targeted in Mumbai ? Or the leaders from UP and Bihar who go to Mumbai. Have you ever heard that they were targeted saying, hey no no Hindi, no Hindi.

The Silence of the Masses:-

This same Tejaswi Yadav goes to Stalin. Tejasvi does not speak English that fluently. Stalin sahab probably does n’t speak Hindi publicly. There is Fadnavis government in Mumbai. Raj Thackeray also has many friends in UP and Bihar. But these leaders will not fight among themselves. Who will fight? Who are his party workers? From the poor man.It is easy to show power on the poor. So, it is easy to show strength. Second, Hindi has a large population. They are easy to suck. This is why he was targeted. And the biggest problem is that the leaders of UP and Bihar probably do not have the courage to take a stand for their people.

If any big leader from UP and Bihar had openly said from a public platform that he is opposing by taking the name of some big leader in Maharashtra, then perhaps it would have given strength. but do not. However, this problem will not be solved by force, because as soon as you show force, those who have started the protest will also get the support of those who are perhaps silent right now and who want to avoid the imposition of language. Well, an important topic is that it is also necessary to learn the local language. Everyone should learn the local language.

A Language Must Unite, Not Divide:-

If you are going to Mumbai, if you are going bored, learn it. There is no harm. If you live in Maharashtra then learn Marathi. This will increase the connection with culture. Conversation will become easier in shop, office, street, locality. If you are in Karnataka then learn Kannada. A relationship will be formed with the soil there. Like someone just said that if you are living in Mumbai then try to learn Marathi. However, no one can teach a language by beating or scolding. You have to keep this in mind also. We will try to learn but you will not teach us by beating, sir. You have to keep this in mind also. Hindi speakers feel that their identity is being suppressed.

The Real Soul of India:-

Hindi is the official language, why is there punishment for speaking it? Marathi and Kannada people have their own problems. But the result of both of these will be that you imagine that there is a tea stall in Mumbai. There is also a Marathi speaking person sitting there. A Hindi speaking person is sitting. Marathi person says that am proud of Marathi. But there is no problem with Hindi. This may perhaps be the soul of India. This language will unite, not divide. Language is a means of communication. Language is a bridge to the heart and not a weapon to break the society. Be it misbehaviour with the delivery boy or the pressure to speak Marathi on the road. These incidents are very shameful. Be it Raj Thackeray’s politics or the Kannada craze in Karnataka. All this is a conspiracy to do politics in the name of language and people remain silent because their society is being talked about. There is a talk about someone related to him. And the person who has a influence on the society is often silenced by the people.

The Conclusion: Enough of This Drama:-

Caste, religion, language, whatever the issue, any leader starts talking about caste. Even if he is talking dirty. People say leave him, he is from our cast. It is from our religion. But if something is wrong then you will have to learn to call it wrong. If you don’t want to stay united then fight and die among yourselves. Marathi, Hindi, Kannada, every language is the pride of India, friend. Learn each other’s language with love, without force. There is strength in unity. We hope that the people in Maharashtra and Karnataka who are listening to us. Next time they will not impose that and Hindi speaking people will also go and learn it. We will stop this drama. We will awaken the real soul of India. And when we come to Maharashtra, we will drink a cup of tea in Hindi, Marathi , the language of love. Being Indians, we hope that we will get good tea in Maharashtra.
