Is COVID Making a Comeback? Rising Cases, New Variant & What India Must Do Now

COVID-19 Returns: Is India Prepared?:-

Is COVID-19 coming back again ? Have you forgotten about COVID-19? That year 2020 when the whole world came to a standstill. The roads appeared deserted. Only screams were heard in the hospitals. Schools and colleges were closed. Every day we got news of losing our loved ones through social media. That trouble, that period of uncertainty, that fear which left such wounds in us that we felt we would never forget them. But then the vaccine came, life got back on track and slowly we started moving on from that pain.

Today perhaps we do not feel that fear but is that fear returning again as cases are increasing from Singapore to Hong Kong. IPL is going on in India in which Travis Head does not play for Lucknow and the reason turns out to be Covid-19. Bigg Boss’ Shilpa Shirodkar falls victim to Covid-19. Harbhajan Singh has appealed to be cautious about Covid-19 a few hours ago. And when all these news about celebrities getting infected with Covid are coming, is it an indication that those scary times might come back again? That period when there was a lockdown. We had masks on our faces. We used sanitizer throughout the day. Will all this become a part of our lives again ? Is Covid really coming back ? If this question is arising in your mind now then the answer is yes. Covid-19 is rearing its head once again, and it is not coming stealthily. It is spreading very fast. Many countries in Asia including Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Thailand are in the grip of a new wave. Thousands of cases were reported in Singapore in the first week of May, far more than in previous weeks. If about Hong Kong, cases are increasing there too. The situation in India is also becoming worrying. When we pulled the data on May 19, 2025, there were 257 active cases.

The JN.1 Variant: What You Need to Know:-

Last week, 164 new cases were reported, indicating that the Covid virus is once again spreading rapidly and this is why discussions about Covid have intensified on social media. Many people feel that the situation in Singapore and Hong Kong will create problems for India in the future. Anyway, if you remember, Covid had increased a lot in the summer. Two-three years when we were troubled. We were worried in June-July and will Covid trouble us this time too in June-July? Will Covid cases increase in India? The answer to this is that behind the new wave, there is a subvariant of Omicron, JN.1, and its new form is causing more trouble.

Health Infrastructure: Monitoring and Preparedness:-

This variant not only spreads rapidly but is also dodging our old vaccine and the immunity we had from the earlier vaccine. WHO said that this variant has a mutation in the spike protein, which is making it more effective in spreading. The 80 new cases in Hong Kong are related to this variant. Now the question is why is this happening? Because we had got the vaccine. The reason is the lack of booster dose. India has only 22% of the population that has taken the booster dose. Even in Singapore and Hong Kong, the booster coverage is very low and due to this the immunity has become weak. Second, change of seasons. It is unusual for the virus to spread in summer. But experts say that this virus does not care about the weather. Third, travel and crowds. The virus is spreading rapidly due to global travel and in densely populated areas. Hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong are examples of this. Another big reason is carelessness. Masks, social distancing, use of sanitiser, washing hands, maintaining cleanliness – all these were things that Covid taught us that we should incorporate into our lives. But we forgot this and this gave the virus an opportunity. In India, ICMR has warned that if we and you are not careful then this variant can spread rapidly in big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai. Now the question is, who are the celebrities in India who are victims of Covid? Because Covid has once again started affecting big personalities and when big personalities get affected, it creates more fear among the common people. He takes matters more seriously.

Celebrity COVID-19 Cases Spark Concern:-

So one thing is the name of Travelset. Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman Travesda, an Australian player, has been found to be Covid-19 positive. His coach Daniel Vettori announced on 18 May that he had tested positive for COVID-19. However, it was said that his symptoms were mild. You will get well soon. Then Shilpa Shirotkar was a heroine of the 90s. Was in Bigg Boss 18. On May 16, 2025, he himself told on his Instagram that he is Covid positive. Said that the symptoms are mild but everyone needs to be careful. A few hours ago, Harbhajan Singh also tweeted on the social media platform X and wrote that Covid is spreading. Please wear your mask again. Use sanitizer. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. His appeal has both scared and alerted people and apart from this, there are many more people who are falling prey to Covid-19. There are many TV actors who are falling prey to this. News is coming in about Bollywood singers also. However those reports are coming.

If Celebrities Are Getting Infected, What About the Common Man?:-

Because he has not officially confirmed it, we are not taking his name. But the question is that when big celebrities are getting Covid, then will the common man who often stays in crowds and is careless, not fall prey to it and if he does, then how dangerous is it? Will COVID-19 be as dangerous as the last time or less so? So the answer given by experts is that in the second wave of 2021, when the Delta variant wreaked havoc in India, it does scare us and that is why this question comes to our mind. There was a shortage of oxygen then.

Experts: This Wave Is Less Severe Than Delta (2021):-

There were no beds in the hospital. Thousands were dying every day. He was scaring us. And that’s why the question arises, will it be the same story this time too ? Whatever the experts have said so far, they say that this variant is not as dangerous as the Delta variant was. There are 257 active cases in India but the situation is not that worrying. There was no need for hospitalization. Even in Singapore, as of 3 May 2025, there were only 24 patients in ICU, which is 0.17% of the total cases. There have been 31 deaths in Hong Kong.

Who’s at Risk? Vulnerable Groups Must Remain Cautious:-

But most of these deaths are of elderly people who were already suffering from some other disease. But there are some concerns like the elderly and vulnerable people who have low immunity are at risk. The variant can be dangerous for those who have not taken the booster dose and have diabetes and heart diseases. Secondly, the new variant of Long Covid is showing symptoms like prolonged fatigue, shortness of breath which is a matter of concern. How impactful is the third vaccine? This new variant bypasses your vaccine immunity, which may lead to mild symptoms. Therefore, after analysing all the things, the experts are saying that the vaccine dose, booster dose and the better health structure in India as compared to the last time will not lead to the possibility of a disaster like 2021. But caution is necessary because even when Covid came in the beginning, we did not realise that something like this could happen in the world. Sometimes it may happen that the roads will be deserted. The streets will become deserted. Only screams of death will come. People will stop meeting each other. The whole story will end. But it happened, it happened and if it happened once then it can happen again sometime. Therefore, we will have to make these manifestations a part of our lives. Now the question is, will Covid always keep returning ? The answer to this is that Covid-19 has become a permanent reality in today’s times.

COVID: A New Permanent Reality Like the Flu:-

Experts say that this virus will be like the flu. Will return with new variants from time to time. WHO had warned in 2023 that Covid will never be completely eradicated. However its effect will reduce. It is spreading in the summer. This time it is getting a bit more shocking. But there is surveillance in India. ICMR and IDSP are monitoring the genome sequencing of the virus every week. The situation in Singapore and Hong Kong is being monitored. And considering that, it is believed that caution will have to be taken for the next two-three months. So the question that is coming to people’s mind is will Covid come every year? Yes, maybe it can come every year. But its impact will be less. If we make the vaccine booster dose a part of our life. Use sanitizer, focus on good food, good diet and use mask. The question is whether a lockdown will be imposed in crowded places? Get scared hearing the name of lockdown. Pictures of 2020 come before my eyes. Empty streets, closed shops, life at a standstill. There is no news regarding lockdown as of now.

Current Situation in India: No Lockdown Planned:-

No expert is saying that a lockdown will be imposed. The Health Ministry of the Government of India has not mentioned the lockdown. Whether it is 19th May or 20th May, when we talk about it today or 21st May, when you will see this video, by then the situation is under control. There are 257 cases. There is no pressure on the hospitals. Singapore and Hong Kong, instead of imposing a lockdown, have only made masks permanent and have talked about increasing the booster dose and speeding up testing. However, as we said, there may be a lockdown in some contexts. If the cases start increasing unlimitedly, if the new variant becomes more dangerous, if the pressure on hospitals increases, all these things happen but till now the broad thing is that the lockdown is like a rumour, this is a rumour. People wrote on many social media platforms that perhaps a lockdown might be imposed at the end of June. It might happen in July. But this is still a social media rumour. It is not happening that schools will be closed or curfew will be imposed. There will be a lockdown. What to do as the old story goes? What not to do? This time again it is the same weapon to fight Covid-19.

Precaution Is the Only Real Weapon Against COVID:-

Vigilance is the only solution that can keep us safe. What to do? If you go to crowded places like malls, cinema halls, West Metro, then try to wear a mask in crowded places. Do n’t put your hands on the escalator when you use it. Do not touch any airy thing directly even while walking in public places. If possible, get a booster dose. It will be easy for you especially those who are 60 plus. Keep washing your hands. Before every two-three hours we were taught to wash hands with soap for 20 seconds. If you can put the sanitizer back then it would be a better thing. After this, if you notice symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty in breathing, then you can get an RTPCR test done. Will remain isolated for five to seven days. Things will get better. Please update me regarding the vaccine. Stay connected with us so that we can keep you updated which is the most important thing because we always bring the correct information to you.Whatever new information comes, we will keep sharing that with you. Take care of ventilation as well. Keep the windows open in the home office. Let there be some fresh air and stay healthy. Meaning try to increase immunity. Eat good things. If you eat good food, you will be happy. One must also keep in mind what not to do. One has to avoid rumours. We will keep giving you information. We have to take care of government things. This fourth wave of Covid, lockdown, rumours about medicines, all these are mostly misleading things. As of now, listen to what WHO, Health Ministry, ICMR are saying and if mild symptoms appear then do not ignore them. Mild fever, mild cough, could be Covid. Do not ignore it thinking it to be a normal cold because now the cold is over and we can forget it anyway. Now if there is fever then these could be symptoms of Covid. Not wearing a mask in public places is risky and don’t touch anything. We have a habit of touching Slater if he’s going to. If you are going to the railway station, then you are walking holding some vehicle. Going to the airport, let’s touch something. Went to the shop and kept touching everything.

Travel Warning: Avoid Singapore and Hong Kong:-

You should not touch those things which can be touched by thousands of people. We are telling you this easily. Apart from this, if you are planning to visit Singapore and Hong Kong then please do not go. Avoid it if possible. This is an attempt. If you do this, you might get better. Do not give any medicine without doctor’s advice. Do not take any steroid or antiviral medicines without consulting a doctor. Overall, COVID-19 is true. He is knocking. But there is no fear like 2020 and 21. Travis Head Shilpa’s case is sparking Harbhajan’s appeal. She is not scaring me. India’s health infrastructure is already stronger. The availability of vaccines, oxygen and ventilators is now much better than in 2021.However this does not mean that we should be careless. It is true that its cases are increasing in Singapore, Hong Kong which is raising alarm.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Fear, Be Prepared:-

Right now, we should not have this question in our mind as to how much it will return, what will return, how much it will scare us. Our effort should be to put more emphasis on how prepared we are. If it comes. Masks, booster dose, precautions, the basic information we told you which you already know. If you do this then Covid cannot do anything to you. We showed it in 2020 to and we also saved our loved ones. We need the same spirit in 2025 as well. We do not have to be afraid, we have to be cautious and because of this caution we will not let life come to a standstill again. So be careful, stay safe and let us together defeat Covid once again.
